How Ancient Influences Have Shaped My Graphical Digital Art Language

Digital Art Method
With the use of a pc I am now able to marry and vary both 2d and 3d elements with much greater speed and directness. Due to the modular method I use to build compositions and the possibility that combined motifs can be, in turn, recycled the complexity of my digital art grows exponentially over a constant time. This increase in complexity seems, rather conveniently, to follow the advances made in affordable home processing power. Digital tools and processing are now, I feel, an integral part of my creative process.

Analogue Art Method
Even with the many advantages of using a computer I still derive the key structures and relationships (the meat and two veg) of my compositions, with a compass and rule on paper. The entire history of the process is recorded on paper, even after erasing and redrawing many times. This is essential to see the key relationships emerging. Using a digital art medium, with current software it would be a direct process to order this information with the same degree of subtlety.

Composed Not Generated
A common misconception about my work is that it is computer generated. I use the computer as a tool to map out my visual thinking thus rendering a digital art. It does not do this thinking for me. My work has never been formulaic in the sense that an algorithm or equation generates part of or a whole composition. Creating dynamic art could never be such a linear process. As entities in nature evolves in reaction to innumerable variable influences, so too does art evolve from inexpressibly complex sources.

Graphic Artists

Out with the old and in with the new

The graphical style of my compositions is not something I purposefully went out to achieve. It is simply the clearest and purest means I have found to express my subject and method, this being the geometry itself. So far, when approaching the established fine art world I have registered a view that my work is graphic design aspiring to be art. I have no background in graphic design, but contend this view for a different reason. This view implies graphic design is in some way sub art, or more accurately in my case, that a purely graphical language cannot express or 'deal with' the concerns of ART, whatever they are believed to be.

Art Aspiring toward Graphic Design
Graphic designers are the true craftsmen/women of new media. They are the creators of the new visual languages and formats which will form the future interfaces we will use to access tomorrow's information age. This in turn will feed into the shape of the art of tomorrow. It may be, as was the case with Michelangelo that those who will be regarded as the great masters in the future will start their life's work being looked upon as tradespeople. I find it odd when galleries that employ the services of graphic designers to create an identity for them through publications and web design, cannot recognise in graphic design the true cutting edge of visual communication.

Looking Beyond Genre
I personally call myself an artist and my work art because it exists for its own sake, and I feel, in its own right. I would not know what else to call it. However I do acknowledge my work is influenced by concerned shared with graphic design and other spheres of design. If something of this can been seen in my work that is a good thing from my own perspective. Whatever functions or definitions are given to my work by me or by others, I would like people to meet it on its own terms. Only if this is done can I give what I have to offer in return. Art for me is not a one way thing, it is a fair exchange of faith between artist and audience.
